Magnolia Plantation and Gardens has partnered with the Zigong Lantern Group in China to present a Lantern Festival, the first ever at a public garden in North America.

‘Lights of Magnolia: Reflections of a Cultural Exchange!’ will debut in the garden on Friday night November 15, 2019. At a special sneak preview for members of the international press, GardenComm is co-hosting a Region IV meeting on Saturday, November 9. Guests will have the ability to meet the team of Chinese artists responsible for the installation. They will have the first view of the evening’s lighted trails and garden pathways.

The ‘Lights of Magnolia’ feature custom-designed installations of large-scale thematically unified lanterns, a fusion of historic Chinese cultural symbols and images that represent the flora and fauna of Magnolia, America’s oldest garden.

Tom Johnson, Magnolia’s executive director, said Magnolia is well positioned to play a prominent role to help boost Charleston’s tourism traffic. “We are expecting record-breaking attendance for this visually stimulating display of stunning Chinese art that will glow in the night,” Johnson said. “Magnolia is constantly looking for opportunities to enhance the garden experience.”

The organizers of this meeting have not made any hotel reservations. There are many within within a ten mile radius. For more economical (and newer!) national chain hotels please look in and around the town of Summerville SC. With traffic in the Lowcountry being what it is, you will find that roads are less congested and your trips faster. Also, most of these hotels include free breakfast AND free parking. That is something that most downtown Charleston hotels cannot afford to do.

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens usually puts up its speakers and international guests at The Town and Country Inn, 2008 Savannah Hwy, Charleston, SC 29407. It, too, is very close to the Ashley River Road Historic Plantations. They have a terrific breakfast buffet and marvelous Sunday Brunch.

If you want to have an experience of a lifetime, you could luxuriate at The Inn at Middleton Place, 4290 Ashley River Rd, Charleston, SC 29414. It is a contemporary hotel on an historic plantation only five miles from the meeting at Magnolia.

For specific details, any additional suggestions, or to have questions answered please contact Kirk R. Brown, National Outreach Coordinator, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. He is in the GardenComm directory and also on-line.
